Mobility is a crucial element of hunter-gatherers’ adaptations to their environments. This seminar considers the variables that condition hunter-gatherer mobility, and why some hunter-gatherers become sedentary. It briefly considers the effect of a reduction in mobility on subsistence, technology, and political organization. Finally, it examines how we can “measure” mobility from lithic assemblages looking especially at the difficulty of separating patterns in assemblages produced by mobility from patterns produced by trade.
