Scientist Position in Archaeological Science (isotopic studies)

[Emplois, bourses, prix, stages]

This research position may begin immediately
Leipzig : Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology

The Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology unites scientists with various backgrounds (natural sciences and humanities) whose aim is to investigate the history of humankind from an interdisciplinary perspective with the help of comparative analyses of genes, cultures, cognitive abilities, languages and social systems of past and present human populations as well as those of primates closely related to human beings.

The Department of Human Evolution of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig (Germany), invites applications for a research position in isotopic studies. In the Department, palaeoanthropological research is conducted within a multidisciplinary environment involving groups of scientists including biological anthropologists, Palaeolithic archaeologists, archaeological scientists, and geochronologists. Isotope mass spectrometry forms a significant component of the archaeological sciences group with a well-equipped laboratory. More information about the Department and the labs can be found on our website.

We are seeking a researcher to conduct isotopic studies in the broader context of Pleistocene human evolution. This includes sample collection, analysis, methodological development and publication. The ideal candidate may work on different types of material but preferentially on material recovered from archaeological sites of interest for the department. We are particularly interested in researchers able to address environmental issues such as climate or seasonality and who can interact with geochronologists, palaeoanthropologists and archaeologists within the Department.

This research position may begin immediately. The selected candidate will have a significant track record of research. Conditions will depend on seniority and the appointment is extendable up to six years.
Joint or partial appointments will be considered if the appointment is mainly based in Leipzig. The Max Planck Society is committed to employing more physically impaired individuals and to increasing the share of women in areas where they are underrepresented, and therefore expressly encourages applications from such qualified individuals.

For further information please contact Prof. Jean-Jacques Hublin (hublin@eva.mpg.de). Applications must be made online via our website http://www.eva.mpg.de/positions-available.html and should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, reprints of selected publications, a short statement of research interests, and the names of three referees. Please hand in these documents during the application process. The search for these positions will continue until a successful candidate has been selected.
